EP tables draft resolution on impact of trade on global value chains
The European Parliament has prepared a draft resolution on the impact of the EU’s trade policies on global value chains. The draft by Ms Maria Arena (BE, S&D) calls on the Commission to develop upgraded trade and sustainable development (TSD) chapter model in the EU’s free trade agreements to include binding and enforceable provisions; to include clauses that fix a minimum level of social, environmental and safety standards and; to work towards a mandatory social and environmental traceability labelling system. The INTA committee is expected to vote on the report on 11 July and the plenary on 11 September. If adopted, the motion for a resolution is not legally binding but reflects the expectations of the European Parliament. The Commission is expected to consider Parliament’s recommendations if it decides to draft a legislative proposal on the subject.
